36,700 items have been given a new life - direct reuse is a hit at recycling centres
By Finn Kjær, Recycling Manager at ARGO
In just six months, citizens in Kalundborg, Roskilde and Stevns Municipalities have given 36,700 items a new life. Things that might otherwise have ended up in the containers at ARGO's recycling centres. The CO2 savings amount to approximately 450 tonnes. This corresponds to the annual carbon footprint of approximately 40 Danes and shows that even small actions can make a big difference to our climate.
The concept is called Direct Reuse and behind the initiative are Kalundborg, Roskilde and Stevns Municipalities together with ARGO. Direct Reuse is about making it easy and accessible for everyone to participate in the circular economy. Because when we reuse things directly, we save resources and reduce waste.
We have tried to make this mission easy to join by setting up tents at ARGO's recycling centres and furnishing them with shelves divided into categories. Here you can drop off good things for others to enjoy - or pick up something you need yourself. When you pick up items, please register them in the Direct Reuse app. This way, you help us get a complete overview of our joint efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. Already 8,000 people have downloaded the app. And the most popular items so far are kitchenware, homewares and toys - items that are now getting a new life instead of being thrown away.
I am truly proud of how all of you in Kalundborg, Roskilde and Stevns Municipalities have embraced our new initiative.
To make it even easier for you to contribute, we are now extending the opening hours of the tents to follow the opening hours of the recycling centres. This means that you can drop off and pick up items when it best suits your schedule.
With the impact you've helped demonstrate over the past five months, I want to encourage even more people to participate in Direct Reuse. Together we can create a greener future where we produce less waste and give our resources a longer life.
Small actions make a big difference.
