I've learned a lot about myself and found peace in knowing that I can have a job despite my challenges. So says 18-year-old Caroline Maj Nilsson after five weeks of internship at ARGO's second hand store Gensalg at the recycling centre in Roskilde.
Caroline Maj Nilsson is the fifth intern at Gensalg this year. Here she helps sort and evaluate all the good reusable items that the store receives and helps to style both shelves and clothing racks. After five weeks in the store, she has no doubt why Gensalg wins the NExTWORK Company of the Year award:
There's a very special community here and some very open colleagues who really take responsibility for us interns. I can say yes and no to tasks and that has meant a lot for my self-esteem," says Caroline Maj Nilsson.
Every year, 5,000 young people are left without jobs and skills training. This has major social and economic consequences for the individual, and according to the ROCKWOOL Foundation, it costs society DKK 12-15 billion a year that so many young people are out of the labour market. NExTWORK is a network-based employment initiative backed by the ROCKWOOL Foundation, which works long-term to get the most vulnerable unemployed young people to start and continue in education or work.
One of the strengths of our collaboration with NExTWORK is that they organize events where we and the young people can meet each other before they choose an internship. In this way, we are able to welcome some very motivated interns when they start with us," says Ditte Titskov, manager of Gensalg.
Caroline Maj Nilsson has completed both primary and secondary school, but suffers from tension headaches. This means she is limited in how much she can strain herself. For example, she temporarily loses her vision if she exerts herself too much. The internship at Gensalg is therefore helping Caroline Maj Nilsson learn the extent to which she can work:
It has given me important experience of what it's like for me to have a job and when I need to say no and take care of myself. I've also found that I really like the tasks I have at Gensalg, she says.
That's why Caroline Maj Nilsson has decided that she would like to extend her eight-week internship.
