Customers benefit from positive result
ARGO's positive annual result is good news - also for the wallets of district heating customers. Exactly one year ago, the ARGO waste-to-energy plant in Roskilde was threatened with closure. As a result of a political agreement in the Danish Parliament to reduce incineration capacity in the Danish waste sector, the Danish Association of Local Authorities had published a report just before Christmas 2020 that contained the now historic "closure list". Among other things, the report proposed the closure of one of the country's newest waste-to-energy plants - ARGO.
Today, we can be satisfied that many good forces ensured that the Danish Energy Agency in February 2021 swept the "closure list" off the table and thus ensured the survival of one of the country's most efficient and environmentally friendly plants

Positive financial results
ARGO has just published its financial results for 2021, which show such a positive result that both the customers who deliver waste to ARGO and the citizens who receive district heating from ARGO can rejoice.
According to Niels Hörup, the excellent financial result is primarily due to three factors:
- Revenue from electricity sales has been significantly higher than budgeted.
- ARGO employees have ensured efficient operation of the waste-to-energy plant and thus record heat production
- The incineration capacity has been optimally utilized by importing more than 87,000 tonnes waste.
In addition to being a financial gain for ARGO, the import of waste has also been a great benefit for the environment and a socio-economic gain for Denmark.
Thus, a reduction in totalCO2 emissionsin Europe by almost 48,000 tonnes can be attributed to ARGO's waste imports alone. In addition, the imported waste contributes approximately DKK 38 million to the treasury in the form of taxes - out of the approximately DKK 150 million that ARGO pays in taxes.

Benefits district heating customers
All of ARGO's heat production is sold to VEKS, and the efficient operation of the waste-to-energy plant has ensured district heating production of no less than 2,900 TJ, equivalent to the annual heating needs of more than 57,000 families.
ARGO's positive financial result means that VEKS can look forward to a refund for 2021 from ARGO of more than DKK 23 million. The gain will benefit all VEKS' customers in 2022.
At a time of extremely high natural gas and electricity prices that hit many people hard, it is very positive to note that ARGO returns more than DKK 23 million to district heating customers. In VEKS, we decided already in December 2021 to reduce the district heating price with effect from January 1, 2022 - and that before we knew about the positive financial results from ARGO. VEKS has a district heating system based on multiple fuels and technologies: District heating comes from sustainable biomass, heat from waste-to-energy plants, surplus heat from industry and biogas. This multi-fuel system is now showing its strength. It's good for your wallet to share the heat.
